Ohio Fall Burn Ban 2026

Ohio Fall Burn Ban — October & November 2026

Ohio’s statewide fall burn ban prohibits open burning from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during October and November, running through Nov. 30, to reduce wildfire risk.

Key Rules

  • When: October 1 – Nov. 30, 2026
  • When & where: In unincorporated areas, open burning is banned 6 a.m.–6 p.m. statewide
  • Allowed hours: Burning may be permitted 6 p.m.–6 a.m., but only if allowed by type of fire and local rules
  • Applies to: Leaves, brush, yard waste, debris, trash, and burn barrels
  • Not weather‑dependent: The ban is in place regardless of rain or cool weather

Why the Ban Exists

ODNR says fall brings dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds that can cause small fires to escape and spread quickly into grass, brush, or forest.

Prohibited Materials

Never burn

  • Food waste
  • Dead animals
  • Items with rubber, grease, asphalt, petroleum products, plastics, or similar materials

Safety & Legal Notes

  • Check local rules — some municipalities or counties may have stricter or additional restrictions
  • Before burning: Know weather, have water/tools ready, never leave unattended, and keep fire at least 1,000 ft from a neighbor’s occupied building
  • If a fire escapes: Call the local fire department immediately
  • Penalties: Violators can face citations and fines

Alternatives

ODNR encourages composting, chipper disposal, or other safe methods instead of burning.

Tip: For official guidance, see the Ohio EPA Open Burning page and your local fire department before starting any fire.
